Located in western Carolina on the edge of Lake James, real estate in Nebo welcomes all to some of the most exquisite experiences with nature in the United States.  Her claim to fame used to be that she was named after the biblical Mt. Nebo, having been settled by a man named Andrew Hunter.  More significantly, Mr. Hunter married Lydia Birchfield, a woman who survived a childhood ambush and scalping, and lived to raise a large extended family here.  Nowadays, however, Nebo is better known as the U.S. Forest Services entryway into the infinite beauty of Pisgah National Forest.

With the medium-sized town of Marion only a few miles away and the larger Asheville only a half hour to the west, second-home owners, vacationers and year-round residents appreciate the convenience of this spot on the eastern edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Many Nebo properties are laced around creeks and the Catawba River, which flows into the gorgeous Lake James.  At Dales Creek, Bear Creek and Hemphill Creek, you can dream a little about your log cabin in Nebo.  Venture further west along Memorial Park Road or up to Wildlife Road and find yourself a McDowell County farm for your horses.  If you love boating and fishing, Nebo property will offer access to docks along Lake James.  Marion Country Club may be just the place for your more refined moods.

Try abandoning your daily routines to experience waterfalls, pristine trout streams, magnificent hiking trails, and golf courses.  Wherever you land, you can be assured that Mother Nature will always be with you.  That’s how the people here like it.  The Pisgah District is a Mecca for vacationers, naturalists and adventurers, offering a wide range of options for your recreating pleasure.  Featuring Mt. Pisgah and straddling both sides of the Blue Ridge Parkway, visitors and residents enjoy hiking, back packing, camping, fishing, biking, horseback riding, swimming, rock climbing, car touring; and waterfalls, wildlife, historical areas on weekend trips.  Four beautiful ski areas in the higher 6,000+ elevations add winter exhilaration.

Within Pisgah, Linville Gorge is one of four major gorges in western North Carolina—one of the wildest, most beautiful and possibly most treacherous canyons in the eastern United States.  Expect to see a variety of exciting flora, fauna, and wildlife as the elevations change.

The mild southern climate makes most areas accessible year round.  Start at the U.S. Forest Service campsites very close to town.  Pull out your backpack, tent and hiking boots—or, at least, pack up some sandwiches, chips and refreshments—and head on up through town to the nearby woods and listen for the familiar “cuk-cuk-cuk-cuk” of the pileated woodpeckers.
