When you move your family east of the Blue Ridge Mountains to Burke or McDowell County real estate and lakefront Lake James, a cosmos of world-class recreational options will be yours 365 days a year.  Plan for your Lake James real estate to be vacation headquarters for friends and family, and you will reap the rewards of sharing the invigorating natural beauty and fresh air present 360 degrees around your Lake James waterfront home.

Family and guests at your lakefront Lake James home will find something new to do, along with old favorites, during each outing for years to come.  There will be plenty of adventures for their autobiographies.  That’s because not only will Lake James satisfy outdoor cravings, but within 50 miles of your Lake James real estate, the plethora of recreational activities includes fly fishing, deep-water fishing, scuba diving, camping, picnicking, sightseeing, snow skiing and tubing, gem mining, horseback riding, backpacking, mountain climbing, rappelling, mountain biking, boating, water skiing, kayaking, canoeing, whitewater rafting, bird watching, spying on wildlife, nature walks, golfing, hunting, and exploring.

The unique natural features that draw tourists to an amazing array of fascinating natural features—the Blue Ridge Mountains, Pisgah National Forest, Grandfather Mountain, Linville Gorge and Wilderness, the Blue Ridge Parkway, historic Overmountain Victory Trail, Catawba Falls, Wiseman’s View, Table Rock, Hawksbill Mountain, Mount Mitchell State Park, South Mountain State Park, and Vein Mountain—offer residents an awesome everyday life.

Beginning with scrumptious deep blue waters of Lake James ruffled around 154 miles of shoreline, your brood can paddle, splash, and purr over 6,800 acres of surface ripples.  At 1200 feet above sea level, the lake reaches out to fluffy tree-laden shores, foothills, and mountains with thousands of miles of trails under their branches.  The lake experience parallels those in much higher elevations because of the tremendous views of mountains such as Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, along with Shortoff Mountain, Table Rock, and Hawksbill.

Built over a seven-year period beginning in 1912, the manmade lake is the gift of the flowing mountain waters of the three rivers purposefully dammed by thousands of hard-working prison laborers to harness hydroelectricity:  the Catawba River, the North Fork of the Catawba River, and the Linville River.  Today, these rivers continue to be healthy wildlife habitat favored by fishermen.

Many fun experiences begin at private and community docks and beaches, at the semi-private Camp Lake James on the northern shores, and right at Lake James State Park where you can swim, paddle around, fish, boat, hike, horseback ride, backpack, camp, watch birds, identify plants, and view wildlife.  Camp Lake James offers a place on the lake’s northern shores to gather with family and neighbors.  Close to the neighborhoods of Old Wildlife Club and 1780, the semi-private Camp is operated by Crescent Communities.  Guided instruction, kayaking, rock climbing, fishing trips and other adventures on the lake and trails are offered from a secluded outdoor center accessible only by boat and winding mountain roads.

Beginning in this rural area in 1926 when the lake was just a baby, The Marion Lake Club has offered picturesque golfing and amenities such as a clubhouse, pool, tennis courts, marina, and pro shop in a lovely setting on the southeastern shores of the lake.  East of the lake is Silver Creek Golf Course, a championship design by Tom Jackson near the South Mountains, and southwest is the Old Fort Golf Course off of I-40.

The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail passes the lake also.  It is a wonderful hike retracing the footsteps of citizen soldiers marching to defeat the British at King’s Mountain in South Carolina.  (to be continued in Part 2 of “Recreation Plethora”)
