North Carolina’s Lake James real estate comes with some of the most fantastic golfing opportunities anywhere. The exquisite Blue Ridge Mountain and Lake James views combine with an extraordinary complement of golf-course architecture and communities to keep every golfer comfortably on his or her toes. From the moderate lake climate to the cooler High Country breezes, golfers at Lake James and Marion NC real estate begin with Marion Lake Club in Nebo, scoot a few miles southwest to Old Fort Golf Course, then up to Mount Mitchell Golf Club, and over to Linville Falls Golf Club. Resident golfers always find new company and new greens in a beautiful convenient setting near their Marion NC real estate and lakefront Lake James homes.
Just a few miles east of the town of Marion, Marion Lake Club Golf Course is the only course that overlooks rippling Lake James. Surrounded by Lake James homes on wooded peninsulas that reach out into the waters, the nearest residential communities are the new Old Wildlife Club, Lakeview Shores, Bayshore, and Lakeview Point. Designed by golf-course architect, Russell Breeden, the Marion Golf Club was established in 1923 and displays impressive views of Linville Gorge and Shortoff Mountain. It is a par 70 measuring 6,300 yards from the back tees with a 7-tee driving range. A semi-private golf course open year round, the club offers several membership packages; a putting green and driving range; tennis courts, swimming pool, and access to the lake; and a pro shop and an expansive clubhouse.
Southwest of town is Old Fort’s semi-private 9-hole course is open all year and is a great place to take the entire family. For under $20 each, everyone can choose between the full 6,458 yards from the back tees to 5,828 from the front or 4,866 from the ladies tees. Most fairways are lined with trees, and the streams and ponds come into play on many holes. Both of these courses have Bermuda fairways and bent grass greens and rolling terrain.
Moving northwest to the cooler elevations 3,000 feet below the peak of Mt. Mitchell in Burnsville, the Mount Mitchell Golf Club in the Toe River valley offers “golf at its best.” The course has been honored with 4 ½ stars by Golf Digest as “Places to Play” and ranked by North Carolina Magazine in the Top Ten Public Courses in the State. This “golfing jewel” comes with many a challenge to the par 72 along its flat, bent grass tees, greens, and fairways. While a pristine river flows through the midst, the profound mountain scenery makes it doubly hard to keep focused on golf. Additionally, the clubhouse offers fine dining and great views of the course as well as of Mt. Mitchell, Hawtree's Pub serves up refreshments, and the Pro Shop carries stylish golf wear and gear. Fees run about $44-85 depending on the season and day.
Throw the clubs into the trunk and head further north to High Country’s Linville Golf Club, one of the best efforts of designer Donald Ross. This classic course opened in 1924 and, though it remains near the original design, it is undergoing a three-year program dedicated to returning it completely to the designer’s vision. Expect good conditions, friendly staff, and outstanding scenery. Always be prepared for 10-15 degree cooler weather and plentiful rain, the very elements that create lush fairways, thick greens (and roughs!), refreshing breezes, and lots to conquer. Members as well as guests of the adjoining Eseeola Lodge are welcome to this award-winning experience. Some of the esteemed ratings include: Greatest 100 Holes of Golf (The Par 4 third hole), America's Best Courses for North Carolina (2006) #3, and America's Best Courses for North Carolina (2005) #5 by Golfweek; Recognized for Excellence America's Top Rated Golf Courses by ZAGAT Survey 2006/2007; Top 100 Courses You Can Play 2006-2007 #40 — Golf Magazine; and ‘Golf Course of the Day’ for May 7, 2004 by ESPN and Golf Digest, . The variety of stunning and challenging golfing options underscores the benefits of owning real estate in this western part of the state.
