Lake James
Recreation Plethora at Lake James Real Estate, Part 4
By Harris Realty

When you choose Lake James real estate, you will be choosing to host friends and family every autumn when they come out to awe at the fireworks display along the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Just east of Marion real estate, the hardwoods fire up the most fantastic multihued blaze of colored leaves along the US 221 Loop from Asheville to Linville Falls—branding a cherished lifetime memory.

Some will also visit your lakefront Lake James home on the way to the celebration of the Overmountain Victory Trail; and others will linger for the best hikes of Pisgah National Forest.   Somewhere between the Lake James waterfront activities and the wealth of exploratory activities, you’ll also have time to chase the lightning bugs at dusk.

Pisgah National Forest

Located in the heart of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, the Pisgah National Forest envelopes the Lake James area like a cloak.  Pisgah features some of the most beautiful and rugged mountain scenery and best recreational opportunities in eastern North America.  It is a large forest that covers much of the north and central western mountains of North Carolina and is divided into four Ranger Districts.  In the Pisgah you can hike through virgin forest, mountain bike over endless single-track, paddle world-class whitewater, fly fish, climb, and even ski.  The region is dotted with relics of the 300-year-old Appalachian folk arts and crafts tradition.

The Pisgah District is a Mecca for vacationers, naturalists and adventurers, offering a wide range of options for recreating pleasure.  The mild southern climate allows year-round accessibility.  The Pisgah Ranger District is dominated by Mount Pisgah on the Blue Ridge Parkway and extends on both sides of the Parkway.  This area is especially noted for easy access to many beautiful waterfalls, wonderful hiking and camping opportunities, the Cradle of Forestry, and more.  The district also includes the Shining Rock and Middle Prong Wilderness areas.

The Appalachian/French Broad Ranger District lies along the North Carolina / Tennessee border, northeast of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Among the highlights of this region are the Harmon Den area, a Mecca for horseback riders; Max Patch Mountain with stunning panoramic views; the French Broad River; and the Appalachian Trail.

The Grandfather Ranger District lies southeast of the Blue Ridge Parkway from north of Asheville to Blowing Rock.  Linville Gorge is the predominant feature of the area with very rugged terrain to challenge even experienced hikers.  The Gorge is one of North Carolina's most impressive land formations created over millions of years by the scouring action of the Linville River.  With an average depth of 1,400 feet, it is known as the “grand canyon of North Carolina.” and is a haven for hiking, rock climbing, fishing, and just plain deep breathing.  But there are also easier trails.  Other significant features include the Wilson Creek area, which is highly favored among kayakers and the Brown Mountain off-road vehicle area.

The Appalachian/Toecane Ranger District lies northwest of the Blue Ridge Parkway from north of Asheville to Blowing Rock and to the Tennessee state line. This area contains some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the east including important wildflower habitats at Craggy Gardens and Roan Mountain.  Mount Mitchell (and Mount Mitchell State Park) and Grandfather Mountain, a privately owned, international biosphere preserve, are not National Forest Service property but lie inside this district.
