People have also been known to explore the area on their Harleys during the Baja 1000. Savor the distinctive landscapes, waterfalls, trout streams, new trails and the magnificent Lake James. Keep it simple and allow yourself and your paintbrush to breath in the serenity, the nobility of this area—steeped with life, with battles, with grandeur.
When you decide to look at properties for sale, try booking a weekend at a B&B in the area like The Inn at Blue Ridge or the mountaintop Alpine Inn. The Barn House Inn with its quiet country walking creek, the Inn on Mill Creek, Robardajen Woods and Souther House will also oblige. You may even experience the feeling of the Native Americans who discovered this idyllic spot 6,000 years ago or the Scots and Irish who settled in the 1700s.
Claims to Fame
The McDowell’s were prominent Whigs, patriots, and commanders during the American Revolution, providing plenty of sons and patriots for that cause and then more when North Carolina joined the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Which Col. Joseph McDowell was the Hero of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War? Regardless of the confusing historical accounts of two men who resided in the same county, married sisters, were in the same Legislature and were both at King’s Mountain, Joseph McDowell of this town (son of “Hunting” John McDowell) was the only Joseph McDowell to have served in U.S. Congress from North Carolina. In 1788, he spoke several times as a member of the North Carolina Convention. A physician and lawyer by profession, Col. McDowell is regarded as having a bright intellect. Another compatriot, Samuel Price Carson served as Representative from North Carolina. He was born here and was instrumental in the independence of Texas in 1836.
On a hunting trip, the father, "Hunting" John, was enamored with the area, its rich soil, and virgin forest abounding in game. Young John wrestled another man to decide who had the right to put up his claim at this beautiful spot—a common practice in pioneer days. After winning, John made up his mind to settle and chose the name for the area.
